Out With the Old: What Your Managed Services Provider Really Wants

Here’s a little intel about the IT Managed Services Provider (MSP) market: Most MSPs are only familiar with the equipment and software that they sell. Don’t be surprised when you’re told to completely abandon the hardware and software you’ve been using to adhere to your newly chosen provider.

Out With the Old, In With the New

It’s a sad fact. Beyond some general computer knowledge, the engineers at most MSPs only have training on the equipment and systems that they sell.  This means that they lack the skills and knowledge to manage or maintain a broad variety of networking gear, operating systems, and software.

Now, most of the time these MSPs are selling Intel-based PCs and Microsoft Windows along with Microsoft 365 cloud solutions. All of which work well for most business customers, but this also means that they can only manage the specific brands of firewalls, security software, anti-virus, and backup solutions that they sell. See where we’re going with this?

It’s Not You, It’s Your Software

When you sign up with a new MSP, guess what? You’ve got to dump whatever it is you are already using and must purchase new hardware, software, and servers. This is often accompanied by a lengthy and expensive migration process—that is, if you want them to effectively support you. If you think that commission doesn’t play a part in this, we have some news for you. It does!

Are You Ready to Commit to That?

Before you commit to a new MSP, think about this:

1) Can they support operating systems other than Windows, like Linux or Macintosh computers?

2) Can they guarantee that you won’t have to replace your existing anti-virus or backup solution?

If the answer to either of those questions is no, watch out. You’re about to dump your current situation, costing you unnecessary money and wasting a lot of time.
